Changbaishan
Volcanic landscapes, serious winter sport and forest resorts in China's northeast
Changbaishan pairs a weather-dependent crater lake with China's most complete destination ski resort. It is a seasonal luxury trip: winter for ski-in access and hot pools, summer and early autumn for the national park, forest walks and a chance — never a guarantee — to see Tianchi clearly.
Getting there
Changbaishan railway station serves the north-slope area around Erdaobaihe; Changbaishan West station and Changbaishan Airport serve the large western ski resort. These bases are not interchangeable, so choose the slope and hotel before booking transport and reserve a car for park transfers.
When to go
Mid-November to March for skiing; June to early October for hiking and national-park access. Tianchi is frequently obscured by cloud or closed by wind in any season, so keep expectations and the schedule flexible.
How long: 4–7 days
Give it 4 days for the headline sights, or up to 7 to see it properly and eat your way around.
Four nights work for a focused ski stay or one park slope with a weather buffer. A week allows separate north and west experiences, forest time and a second Tianchi attempt if conditions defeat the first.
