A little help, wherever you are
The right words. Right when you need them.
Show your hotel address to a driver, explain a dietary need, or ask for help. Clear Chinese phrase cards to keep close at hand — open this page before you go offline.
Payment not going through?A few practical steps to try.
- Try the other wallet — Alipay if WeChat failed, or vice versa.
- Open your own payment code and have them scan you, instead of scanning their QR. Different rails, and this often works when the other doesn’t.
- Switch to a card from a different bank. Most failures are your own bank’s fraud block, not China.
- Pay cash, and show the “no change” card below. Carry ¥300–500 for exactly this.
Emergencies: Police 110 · Ambulance 120 · Fire 119. These work with no SIM and no credit.

I am vegetarian. No meat, no fish, no meat stock, no lard. Vegetables cooked in vegetable oil only.
Saying only '我吃素' often still gets pork stock or lard. This spells it out.
Dietary needs
我是纯素食者。不吃肉、鱼、蛋、牛奶、黄油,也不要肉汤。只要蔬菜、豆制品、米饭、面条。
Wǒ shì chúnsùshízhě. Bù chī ròu, yú, dàn, niúnǎi, huángyóu, yě bùyào ròutāng.

SEVERE ALLERGY: I cannot eat peanuts or any nuts. Even a small amount could kill me. No peanut oil.
Peanut oil is a default cooking oil in much of China. Lead with the severity.

Wǒ bùnéng chī xiǎomài hé fūzhì. Bùyào miàntiáo, miànbāo, jiǎozi, jiàngyóu. Mǐfàn kěyǐ.
I cannot eat wheat or gluten. No noodles, no bread, no dumplings, no soy sauce. Rice is fine.

I'm sorry, I don't speak Chinese. Could you type it so I can translate?
Typed Chinese is far easier to translate than speech. This phrase unlocks almost any conversation.
The dietary cards are written to be understood rather than translated. “I’m vegetarian” on its own routinely produces a dish cooked in pork stock or lard, so ours name the things that actually catch people out — stock, lard, peanut oil, oyster sauce, soy sauce.
