Golden Sand Beach

金沙滩

On the west side of the bay, a 3,500-metre arc of unusually fine golden sand (grains just 0.2-0.4 mm) with clear water - the best actual swimming beach in the municipality.

The story

What makes this place special

Golden Sand Beach — Jinshatan — is on the far side of Jiaozhou Bay in the West Coast New Area, formerly Huangdao, roughly 3,500 metres of sand on an open stretch of coast. Its reputation rests on the sand itself: grains of 0.2 to 0.4 millimetres, mostly feldspar and quartz with very little silt, which is why it is marketed as the finest beach in Asia. It is a municipal beach, free to enter, and the swimming area formally opens each year from 1 July with changing rooms and lifeguards.

What you’ll discover

A long, wide, genuinely golden beach facing open water, far broader and emptier than the city beaches, backed by resort development and the beer-festival grounds. Roughly two kilometres of the frontage is shallow water, so it suits people who do not swim well. At low tide the rocky ends fill with people foraging. In August the Qingdao International Beer Festival's main site is here, which changes the character of the whole area.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • It is on the other side of the bay from the city — reached via the Jiaozhou Bay tunnel, or by metro Line 1 and a bus or taxi at the far end. Reports of which station to use vary, so check a live map rather than a guide; budget an hour each way.
  • Weekday mornings. Peak summer weekends have been reported at near 80,000 visitors a day, which empties the beach of its main advantage, which is space.
  • Watch the flags. Red means no entry to the water, yellow means paddling only in the shallows, and the tide comes in fast over the flats — do not walk out to the rocks on a falling tide without knowing when it turns.
  • Come an hour before low tide if you want the foraging and the wide flats; that is what local families come for, more than swimming.
  • In August the beer festival site next door is the real attraction and the beach is its car park. Either plan around the festival or avoid the month.

When to come

Early July and September for warm water without the peak crowds; weekday mornings or after four in the afternoon. The beach is windswept and bleak between November and April.

Getting around

Good behind the sand: the promenade, car parks, changing rooms and lifeguard facilities are modern, level and step-free, with ramped access from the road, so the seafront is usable in a wheelchair. The sand itself has no accessible matting. The journey from central Qingdao is the bigger obstacle — a long trip involving a transfer, so a taxi through the tunnel is the practical option.

Worth knowing before you go

Take the Qingdao-Huangdao passenger ferry rather than the metro - 30 minutes across the bay and a far better approach.
