Where to go

Harbin in winter, and why you must check the dates yourself

The ice festival is the reason to go north, and its dates are announced late and can end early. Last season it closed three weeks ahead of schedule when the sculptures melted.

Last verified . Entry rules, fees and limits change often — check the sources at the bottom before you rely on anything here.

Check the dates before you book anything

As of October 2026, the 2026–27 Ice and Snow World dates and prices have not been announced. Neither have the Sun Island snow expo's.

That is not an oversight on our part — they are published late each year. And they are not reliable once published either: the 27th edition opened on 17 December 2025 and closed early, on 21 February 2026, when a record warm spell melted the sculptures.

So: do not plan a late-February Harbin trip around ice. Mid-January to mid-February is the dependable window, and you should confirm the current season's dates before booking flights.

Last season's standard adult ticket was around ¥328 for Ice and Snow World, for reference only.

What there is

  • Harbin Ice and Snow World — the big one. Last season covered 1.2 million square metres using 400,000 cubic metres of ice and snow. Book ahead through the official WeChat account or a platform.
  • Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo — snow rather than ice, and a different site. Around ¥100–198 depending on the source; the 38th edition opened 31 December 2025.
  • Saint Sophia Cathedral — about ¥15–20 to go in, and worth knowing that it is not a working church. Since 1997 it has been the Harbin Architecture Art Gallery, so the interior is exhibition panels, not a functioning cathedral. The exterior is the draw.
  • Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie) — free, a cobbled pedestrian street of Russian and European buildings running down to the Songhua River. Best after dark when it is lit.
  • Polarland — by hall, roughly ¥70–198, near Sun Island so it combines with the snow expo.

The cold is the real planning problem

Dress for −25°C with wind. This is the thing that makes first-timers cut a Harbin trip short, and it is not like cold anywhere most visitors have been.

  • Phone batteries die within minutes outdoors. Keep the phone inside your coat, against your body, and carry a power bank — also inside your coat.
  • Thermals, a proper down coat, insulated boots, a hat that covers your ears, and gloves you can actually use a phone with.
  • Go indoors regularly. The festival sites are large and there is less shelter than you expect.

One more for January 2027

Changchun, about 250 km away, hosts the Winter World University Games from 15–25 January 2027. That will tighten hotel and rail capacity across Jilin and neighbouring Heilongjiang — in exactly the ice-festival window. Book earlier than you otherwise would.

If you go in summer

Harbin from July to September is pleasantly mild, green, and almost empty of foreign tourists. The Russian architecture and the river are still there. It is a completely different and much cheaper city.

Getting there

Harbin Taiping International (HRB) is on metro Line 3; a taxi into town is about ¥80–120. Harbin West handles high-speed rail, with the central Harbin Station also in use — check which one your ticket names.
