Kunqu in a Suzhou garden, forty people walking with the actors

Kunqu was written for private gardens and literati family troupes, and a proscenium kills it. Forty people moving through a Song-era garden at dusk is the form in roughly the setting it was made for, which no theatre seat can reproduce.

The experience

Picture your day

Yu Theatre's Six Records of a Floating Life has run at Canglang Pavilion since 2018, spring to autumn, with 256 performances between February and April 2024 alone. It lasts about 90 minutes: a 20-minute prelude of sizhu and pingtan at Ke Garden, then 70 minutes inside Canglang Pavilion itself. Around forty spectators are split into three groups for the prelude, then led by two servant characters over a bridge and through corridors, a winding path and the foot of the hill as the six seasonal acts unfold. Shen Fu, whose 1808 memoir it is drawn from, arrives by boat.

What makes it different

The access, explained

This is a public ticketed production with a small capacity, not a private hire, and the small capacity is the whole product. Be careful with the claims around it: we could not find any company called the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre offering private or residence performances, and no venue called the Shen Residence. Tourist listings advertising a teahouse Kunqu show could not be verified as to venue or performers. Historical garden Kunqu was genuinely private and literati-staged, which is the line operators borrow.

Planning the details

How to arrange it. Tickets through the production's own Floating Life Collection platform, which also sells half-day packages. Capacity is about forty a night, so book well ahead, and ask whether the performance is in Chinese only, which it is. No permit.

When to go. Spring to autumn only, and the garden performances depend on weather. Evenings.

Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know

You will not follow the words; this is a Chinese-language production of an 18th-century memoir, and a synopsis read in advance is essential. If you want Kunqu explained rather than performed, ask a Suzhou guide for a daytime session with a singer instead. Treat any offer of a private Kunqu performance in a named historic residence as unverified until the venue confirms it to you directly.
