Crown Escalator (Lianglukou Escalator)

皇冠大扶梯

A single 112-metre escalator, 52 metres of vertical rise, built in 1996 to carry commuters between the railway station and the ridge above - once the longest in Asia. Two and a half minutes of pure mountain-city absurdity for the price of a bus ticket.

The story

What makes this place special

The Crown Escalator opened in February 1996 to link Lianglukou, up on the ridge, with Caiyuanba railway station down at river level — a piece of public transport built because the gradient made walking impractical. It is 112 metres long on a 30-degree incline, lifting about 52.5 metres, 1.3 metres wide, running at 0.75 m/s, and takes two and a half minutes end to end. Three escalators are installed, one up, one down and one spare, with two normally running. It is usually described as the second-longest single-rise escalator in Asia, though you will also see it claimed as the longest.

What you’ll discover

A long, narrow, strip-lit tunnel with a single unbroken escalator running the whole way down it, and nothing else. The appeal is the scale and the oddness: you stand still for two and a half minutes watching the tunnel recede, with commuters doing it as a daily routine. From the top at Lianglukou you emerge next to the metro; at the bottom you come out at the old railway station.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Ride it downwards from Lianglukou. Going up, you face a blank tunnel; going down, you see the length of it ahead of you, which is the whole point.
  • It is transport that happens to be a sight, so it costs a flat fare and takes five minutes including walking. Do not build an outing around it — fold it into a trip between Lianglukou and the riverside.
  • The bottom end at Caiyuanba is not somewhere with much to do now that the old station has declined. Plan to continue by metro or taxi rather than exploring on arrival.
  • Lianglukou is an interchange on the metro, so this slots neatly between Liziba, Eling Park and the city centre.
  • There is no view. People expecting a scenic funicular are disappointed; what you get is an impressive piece of 1990s municipal engineering.

When to come

Any time during operating hours. Commuter peaks are busier but also show you what it is actually for.

Getting around

It is an escalator, so you must be able to stand on a moving step for two and a half minutes and step on and off cleanly — not possible in a wheelchair and not advisable with poor balance or a stick. A bad knee is fine, since you stand still. There are no steps at either end beyond the station approaches, but there is also no alternative lift on this route.

Worth knowing before you go

Ride it downwards towards Caiyuanba for the view, and look back up from the bottom - the scale only registers from there. It is a working commuter route, so stand to the right.
