Discover Datong

Datong Museum

大同市博物馆

A free, well-staged museum in the new eastern district covering the Northern Wei capital and the Liao and Jin dynasties that followed - the historical context that makes Yungang and the Liao temples intelligible. Northern Wei tomb figures and Khitan metalwork are the highlights.

The story

What makes this place special

The Datong Museum was founded in 1959 and moved into a large purpose-built modern building that opened to the public in 2014, in the new district south of the old city. Its collection is built around the three dynasties for which Datong was a capital or secondary capital - Northern Wei, Liao and Jin - and around the frontier-garrison and Buddhist material that makes the region distinct. Its Northern Wei holdings, including tomb figures, lacquer and Sogdian-influenced metalwork from Pingcheng-era burials, are nationally regarded.

What you’ll discover

A spiral-planned building with permanent galleries running chronologically: the pre-imperial Dai region, 'Wei capital Pingcheng', 'Liao and Jin Western Capital', and 'Ming and Qing garrison town'. The Northern Wei gallery is the substance - excavated tomb contents, wall-painting fragments, ceramic figures and the metalwork that shows Datong on the Silk Road - and a full-size reconstructed tomb chamber. Two hours covers it properly.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Come here before Yungang, not after. The Northern Wei gallery explains who the Tuoba rulers were and why they carved the grottoes, and the caves are a different experience once you know.
  • The Northern Wei rooms are the collection. The Ming and Qing galleries are ordinary and can be skipped if time is short.
  • It is in the new town south of the walls, not in the old city, and is a taxi ride from the temples. Plan it as a separate half-day, ideally your arrival afternoon.
  • English labelling is partial; the audio guide or a translation app on the panels is worth the effort in the Wei gallery specifically.
  • The Liang Sicheng Memorial Hall is a branch of this museum, so if you are museum-minded the two pair well.

When to come

Your first afternoon in Datong, as preparation for everything else. Being indoors and climate-controlled, it is also the right thing to do on a bad-weather day or in deep winter.

Getting around

Modern purpose-built museum with lifts, ramps, level galleries and accessible toilets - the most accessible site in Datong. Galleries are large and the full route involves a lot of distance on smooth floors; wheelchairs are usually available at the entrance. No barriers for a bad knee beyond overall walking distance, and there is seating in most halls.

Worth knowing before you go

Do this before Yungang, not after - the Northern Wei galleries explain who commissioned the caves and why, which the grottoes themselves barely tell you.
