Western Hills and Dragon Gate

西山与龙门

A forested ridge above Dianchi where Taoist monks spent 72 years carving a staircase, grottoes and the Dragon Gate archway out of the sheer cliff face. The ledge at the top gives the best panorama of the lake and the city.

Western Hills scenic area around ¥40; the Dianchi-Xishan ropeway is separate at ¥60 one way / ¥100 return (child 30 / ¥50)≈ US$5.96–15Half a dayPassport needed

The story

What makes this place special

The Western Hills rise directly from Dianchi's western shore and carry a chain of temples down their length: Huating Temple, founded in the Yuan as Yuanjue Temple and renamed Yunqi Chan Temple in 1923 by the Yunnan governor Tang Jiyao though locals still call it Huating; Taihua Temple; and above them the Sanqing Pavilion, a nine-level Daoist complex on the cliff of Luohan Hill, rebuilt in the Ming Xuande era and enlarged by Daoist priests in the Qianlong era, when it was renamed Yuhuang Pavilion. The Dragon Gate itself is a set of chambers, galleries and a final pavilion, Datian Ge, cut directly into a 66.5m strip of sheer cliff by hand. Accounts of the dates differ sharply: one version has the carving done in three phases between 1781 and 1853, taking 72 years, organised successively by the Daoist Wu Laiqing and by Yang Rulan and Yang Jitai; another dates the start to the early Jiajing era in 1522. Wu Laiqing's own carving, a phoenix with a scroll, is in the chamber named Phoenix Rock. Nie Er, composer of China's national anthem, is buried in the scenic area.

What you’ll discover

A climb or ride up the hillside past temple courtyards to the cliff section, where the path becomes a tunnel cut through rock, barely wide enough for two people, opening every few metres onto balconies with a 300m drop to the lake. It ends at the Dragon Gate pavilion, a small chamber carved from the living rock with figures and inscriptions, and a parapet looking straight down Dianchi. The hand-cut tool marks are visible the whole way.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • The cliff passage is one-way and narrow, and in high season it becomes a standing queue inside the rock. Arrive at opening or come late in the afternoon; being stuck in a stone tunnel behind a tour group is the common experience here.
  • The best way up is the cableway across Dianchi from Haigeng, then the internal shuttle or the short second lift to the Sanqing Pavilion level. Walking from the bottom is a long, hot climb that most people regret.
  • Go up by transport and walk down through Taihua and Huating temples. Both are quiet, properly old and skipped by almost everyone who comes only for the Dragon Gate.
  • The reported elevations vary; the cliff section sits somewhere above 2,300m, so the steps feel harder than their length suggests if you have just arrived in Yunnan.
  • There is a one-way exit at the top with a chairlift down the back of the hill. Check which exit your transport is waiting at before you start; walking back round is an hour.
  • Nie Er's tomb is on the hillside and is a genuine piece of twentieth-century history that gets no visitors.

When to come

Early morning, for an unobstructed cliff passage and clear views over the lake. October to April is dry and clear; summer haze and rain often remove the view that is the entire reason for the climb.

Getting around

The cliff passage is not accessible: it is a narrow, stepped, hand-cut tunnel with constant changes of level and no possibility of turning a wheelchair. It is also hard on a bad knee. The cableway, the internal shuttle and the temple courtyards at Huating and Taihua are reachable with a chair, so the hillside and the lake views are not entirely closed off, but the Dragon Gate itself is.

Worth knowing before you go

The Dragon Gate walkway is a narrow one-way tunnel carved into the cliff with no space to turn around — go up early, and skip it if you are badly affected by heights or tight spaces.
