Moganshan

Bamboo hills, historic villas and design retreats close to Shanghai

Moganshan is the Yangtze Delta's classic summer hill station, now a collection of forest resorts, restored villas and village stays. It works best as a two- or three-night pause built around walking, cycling, tea and time at the property rather than a checklist of sights.

Getting there

High-speed trains reach Deqing from Hangzhou and Shanghai, after which the mountain and its scattered resorts require a 30–60 minute car transfer. Ask the hotel which station to use and arrange pickup: a property described as 'Moganshan' may sit well outside the scenic-area gate.

When to go

April to June for bamboo and mild walking weather, and September to early November for clear days. July and August are the traditional escape from city heat but also the busiest and most humid period.

How long: 2–4 days

Give it 2 days for the headline sights, or up to 4 to see it properly and eat your way around.

Two nights are enough for a property-led reset. Four allow the scenic area, Yucun, a long bamboo walk and an unhurried resort day without turning the short escape into constant car journeys.
