A taste of Pingyao

Yunjincheng Mansion

云锦成·公馆(平遥店)

The upscale option inside the walls, built around the private-banquet cooking of the Shanxi merchant houses that made Pingyao rich — the jinshang family-banquet tradition, served in a restored courtyard mansion. If you want one deliberately nice dinner in Pingyao rather than another plate of noodles, this is the sensible choice.

A place worth making time for

Ranked No. 8 on Ctrip's Pingyao local-cuisine restaurant list with a 4.8 user score, specialising in Shanxi merchant-family banquet cooking; no graded award.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Shanxi merchant banquet set (晋商家宴)
  • Pingyao beef (平遥牛肉)
  • Steamed oat-flour kaolaolao (栲栳栳)
  • Braised pork with aged vinegar (过油肉)

What it actually tastes like

Richer and sweeter than everyday Shanxi food, but the vinegar is still there. Several dishes use a lot of animal fat.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoysesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
