The story

What makes this place special

Xiaoyushan — Little Fish Hill — is a 60-metre hill of about 2.5 hectares north of the eastern end of Laiyang Road, between the old town and the first bathing beach. It was laid out as Qingdao's first hill park in Chinese classical style, rather than in the German or resort idiom of everything around it. Its summit building, an 18-metre three-storey octagonal pavilion with flying eaves, is variously called Lanchao Ge or Guanchao Ge and was designed to answer the Huilan Pavilion at the end of Zhanqiao pier across the bay.

What you’ll discover

A short climb up a small hill to a pavilion, and then the best view in the old city: the whole curve of the shoreline laid out below — Zhanqiao pier, Xiao Qingdao island, Lu Xun Park, Number One Bathing Beach, the headland of Badaguan — and behind it the red-tiled roofs of the German quarter running up the hills. This is the vantage point from which Qingdao's 'red tiles and green trees' actually looks like the phrase. The park itself is small; twenty minutes up, half an hour at the top.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • This is the viewpoint for the old city and it is a ten-minute walk and a small hill, which is why it beats every tall-building observation deck in Qingdao.
  • Go in the late afternoon with the sun behind you and the bay lit — the view faces roughly south-west over the water.
  • Free but with advance registration in practice, bookable on the day; the rotating viewing floor at the top of the pavilion is charged separately, and the ordinary terraces give you the same view.
  • It sits between Number One Bathing Beach, Lu Xun Park and the aquarium, and is a five-minute walk from all three, so it slots into a morning on the shore without a detour.
  • Take binoculars or a zoom. Half the pleasure is picking out individual villas and church towers in the quarter below.

When to come

Late afternoon to sunset, in spring or autumn when the air is clear enough to see the full coastline. Avoid hazy or humid summer days, when the view closes in.

Getting around

Limited. It is a hill park and the climb is by paved paths with sections of steps; the summit pavilion is reached by stairs and its upper floors have no lift. A wheelchair user can get into the lower park with a pusher but will not reach the viewing terrace. A bad knee can do it at a slow pace — it is only 60 metres of ascent — and the view is worth the effort.

Worth knowing before you go

The cheapest great view in Qingdao, and far less crowded than the TV tower - go late afternoon with the sun behind you.
