Discover Qingdao

Zhanqiao Pier

栈桥

Qingdao's symbol: a 440-metre stone jetty built in 1891 as the city's first naval wharf, ending in the two-storey octagonal Huilan Pavilion. The image on every Tsingtao beer bottle.

The story

What makes this place special

Zhanqiao was built as a landing stage in the early 1890s — sources give 1891 or 1892 — before the Germans arrived, as part of the Qing navy's installation at what was then a small coastal town. When German troops landed in 1897 they lengthened it and laid rails along it for unloading cargo, so the pier is the physical point at which the colonial city began. It was rebuilt in 1931 and repaired in 1985; it now runs 440 metres out from the shore and is about eight metres wide. The Huilan Pavilion at the far end, inside the semicircular breakwater, is a two-storey octagonal pavilion with a yellow-tiled helm roof, added in the 1931 rebuild.

What you’ll discover

A straight stone pier walking out into Qingdao Bay from the foot of the old town, ending in the octagonal pavilion, with the small island of Xiao Qingdao and its lighthouse offshore to the east and the red roofs of the German quarter climbing the hill behind you. It is the image on the Tsingtao beer label. The walk out and back takes twenty minutes; the pavilion has a small exhibition inside. Waves break over the pier in rough weather and it is closed when they do.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • The view worth having is back at the city, not out at the sea. Walk to the end, turn round, and look at the old town on its hill — that is the composition on every postcard and most visitors photograph the pavilion instead.
  • It is free and open all the time, which makes dawn here realistic. First light, no crowd, and the fishing boats going out is the best half hour in Qingdao.
  • In autumn and winter the pier is regularly closed by heavy seas with no notice, and in summer it is one of the most crowded hundred metres in the city. Both are worth knowing before you plan around it.
  • Number One Bathing Beach is a short walk east, and the German quarter with St Michael's Cathedral is directly up the hill behind — do the three as one morning on foot.
  • The gulls are fed by vendors selling bread for the purpose. If you do not want birds landing on you, do not carry food.

When to come

Early morning, year round. Spring and autumn for clear air; the pier is at its emptiest and most atmospheric out of the July–August season.

Getting around

Good. The pier deck is flat, wide, paved and step-free from the promenade, so the full 440 metres is achievable in a wheelchair, and there are railings. The Huilan Pavilion's upper floor is reached by stairs only. The promenade at the shore end is level. The hazard is weather rather than terrain: the deck is slippery and spray-washed in rough seas.

Worth knowing before you go

Come at high tide in rough weather - the waves breaking over the causeway are the local attraction, and the gulls are fed here all winter.
