A taste of Shanghai

Yunhe Noodle (Huangpu)

耘和面馆(黄浦店)

A noodle shop on Changle Road with a deliberately dull shopfront and an interior of neon signs and graffiti, which tells you it is aimed at young Shanghai rather than at nostalgia. The noodles are made in house and the headline bowls are dressed with fresh picked crabmeat or seasonal river shrimp. A good bridge between the ¥30 noodle stall and a proper sit-down dinner.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Crabmeat and crab-roe noodles (蟹粉面)
  • River shrimp noodles (虾仁面)
  • Seaweed-crusted yellow croaker (苔条黄鱼)
  • Sauteed chicken gizzard (爆炒鸡胗)

What it actually tastes like

Picked crab is seasonal and at its best in autumn, when hairy crab arrives and the price of the crab bowls climbs with it. Yellow croaker is a river fish and can carry small bones. Chicken gizzard is offal with a firm, springy bite, so order it knowingly.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
