Discover Xi'an
Shaanxi Archaeology Museum
陕西考古博物馆
China's first museum devoted to archaeology as a discipline rather than to finished treasures: it shows you the trenches, the soil sections, the lab work and the reasoning behind the finds. Opened in 2022 and still largely missed by foreign visitors.

The story
What makes this place special
The Shaanxi Archaeology Museum opened on 28 April 2022 in Chang'an district, at the northeast corner of the Wenyuan South Road and Zhongnan Avenue junction, and is China's first museum devoted to the discipline of archaeology rather than to a collection of objects. It occupies around 250 mu with roughly 35,000 square metres of building and 5,800 square metres of indoor display. It shows 4,218 groups comprising 5,215 objects, over 90 per cent of which had never been publicly displayed before. The permanent display is organised in four chapters: the history of archaeology, cultural lineages, discoveries, and conservation science.
What you’ll discover
The opening section traces Chinese archaeology as a practice - from the Song antiquarian Kaogu Tu, through the birth of Chinese field archaeology at Yangshao in 1921, to the 1933 Doujitai excavation at Baoji that began scientific archaeology in Shaanxi. The discoveries galleries then show material from Shimao (stone carvings and jades), Western Zhou bronzes, the most elaborate Western Zhou bronze-wheeled chariot from Zhouyuan, and pottery figures from the Han emperor Wen's Baling tombs. The conservation-science section shows the laboratory work - block-lifting, textile and lacquer recovery - which is what makes this museum different from every other in Xi'an.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Go here instead of a second visit to the Shaanxi History Museum, not instead of a first. This museum explains how things were found and conserved, which is the one story Xi'an's other museums do not tell.
- The conservation-science galleries are the unique content and the part most visitors skip. Entire excavated blocks of soil are displayed mid-excavation, which you will not see anywhere else in China.
- Free entry still requires a timed booking, made through the museum's official WeChat account; capacity is limited and release is daily in the morning for a few days ahead. Turning up without one does not work.
- Public transport out here is poor. Drive, take a taxi or ride-hail - it is in Chang'an district, well south of the walls, and not on a convenient metro walk.
- Allow two to three hours. It is denser in text than object-led museums and rushing it leaves you with nothing.
- The Zhouyuan bronze chariot is the single most impressive object on display and is easy to walk past in the Western Zhou section.
When to come
A weekday morning slot, booked several days ahead. Indoors and climate-controlled, so it is the right choice on a hot, cold or wet Xi'an day.
Getting around
Modern purpose-built museum with lifts, ramps, level galleries, accessible toilets and loan wheelchairs - fully manageable in a chair and easy for a bad knee apart from total walking distance, which is substantial. Seating is provided in most galleries. The outdoor display area of around 10,000 square metres is paved and level.
Worth knowing before you go
Note the unusual Wednesday closure rather than the usual Monday - several Xi'an listings get this wrong. Book at 08:00 sharp; the cap is low for a free museum.
