Xi'an Museum & Small Wild Goose Pagoda

西安博物院・小雁塔

A quiet garden compound combining the slender 8th-century Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the Tang-dynasty Jianfu Temple grounds and a well-curated city museum whose scale model of Tang Chang'an makes sense of everything else you will see. The calmest major sight in Xi'an.

The story

What makes this place special

The pagoda was built between 707 and 709 under the Tang emperor Zhongzong, in the precinct of Jianfu Temple - across the street from the Dajianfu Temple, founded in 684 and renamed by Wu Zetian in 690, which was one of the great centres for translating Buddhist texts brought from India. It began as fifteen storeys and about 45m; the catastrophic Shaanxi earthquake of 1556 brought down the top two, and it now stands thirteen storeys and roughly 43m, a hollow square-based brick tower. It became a protected national site in 1961 and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as part of the Silk Roads Chang'an-Tianshan corridor. Beside it hangs a bell cast in 1192 under the Jin, about 3.55m tall and some 8,000kg, which was lost in a flood, rediscovered in the Kangxi period and brought here; it is rung each morning, and its sound is counted among the traditional Eight Views of Chang'an.

What you’ll discover

A quiet walled park containing the leaning, visibly weathered Tang pagoda, a bell tower with the 12th-century bell, old trees, stone remains of the temple, and - in modern buildings on the same ground - the Xi'an Museum, which is free. The museum is the city's own collection as opposed to the province's: Tang pottery and figures, Buddhist stone sculpture, Ming and Qing seals and jades, and, in the basement, a large illuminated model of Tang Chang'an showing the whole grid of the city with the surviving monuments picked out.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Go for the city model in the museum basement. It is the single clearest way to understand that modern Xi'an sits inside a fraction of the Tang capital, and it makes every other site in the city legible.
  • This is the uncrowded alternative to the Shaanxi History Museum. The collection is smaller but it is free, bookings are easy, and you can actually stand in front of the cases.
  • The pagoda cannot normally be climbed, so treat it as an object in a garden rather than a viewpoint.
  • Come early to hear the morning bell, which is still rung - it is a genuinely old sound and nobody schedules a tour around it.
  • The park around the pagoda is used by local people for exercise and chess and is one of the pleasanter free green spaces inside the city; bring a book rather than rushing off.
  • It is a short taxi ride from the South Gate of the city wall, so it pairs with a wall walk or with the Stele Forest in a half-day on the south side of the old city.

When to come

Weekday morning, early, for the bell and the empty galleries. Spring and autumn for the garden; the museum is a good refuge from summer heat.

Getting around

Good. The museum is a modern building with lifts, level galleries and ramped entry, and the park paths around the pagoda are broad, flat and paved, so a wheelchair can do both comfortably - this is one of the easiest significant sites in Xi'an. The pagoda interior and its stepped base are not accessible, and the bell tower has steps. The basement model is lift-served.

Worth knowing before you go

Sources disagree on the exact opening hours (08:30-18:00 versus 09:00-19:00) and on the pagoda-climb fee, so confirm on the WeChat booking page the day before. The Tuesday closure is the reliable part.
