A private room at a starred Beijing restaurant
A Chinese banquet is designed to be eaten at a round table in a closed room, with dishes arriving to be shared and the service pacing the meal. Booking the room is not status, it is the correct way to eat this food, and the kitchen will cook to a brief if you give it one.
Picture your day
The private room, baojian, is the standard format for serious Chinese dining and a different thing from a Western private dining room: a closed room with its own table, its own server and often its own set menu negotiated in advance. Beijing's top end has had two three-star restaurants since the 2021 guide, King's Joy, which is vegetarian and also took a Green Star, and Xin Rong Ji on Xinyuan South Road, which cooks Taizhou seafood and keeps private rooms through the space. Two other Xin Rong Ji addresses in the city hold one star each.
The access, explained
Private rooms are an ordinary, published part of how these restaurants operate, available to anyone who books, usually with a minimum spend rather than a room fee. That makes the word private here honest, and it is worth saying because the same word is abused everywhere else in this file. What we could not confirm is any chef's table at either three-star restaurant, and the ratings move: King's Joy held two stars in the inaugural 2019 guide and three from 2021, a 2026 roundup still names two three-star restaurants in Beijing but names a different second one, and we could not retrieve an official current list.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. Direct with the restaurant, by phone or WeChat, specifying the room, the number of guests, the budget per head and any dietary limits, and ask the kitchen to set the menu rather than ordering off the card. A third-party booking site reports four to six weeks' notice and two to three months for weekends; we could not verify that. A Mandarin-speaking concierge makes a material difference here.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
Check the current Michelin Beijing list yourself the month you book, because the published write-ups lag by years and at least one well-known name in the 2019 guide was listed without a star at all. Watch the minimum spend on a private room, which can be high for two people and is the reason a room is often not worth it below four. And do not pay a fixer a fee to make a call you could make yourself.
