Commune by the Great Wall, a whole villa
You get an unrestored section of the Great Wall effectively to yourself at sunrise, on foot from your own door, with no ticket gate and no coaches.

Picture your day
You take a whole villa in the Kempinski-managed Commune at Shuiguan, about an hour north of Beijing, rather than a single room. The villas are architect-designed houses of four to six en-suite bedrooms set in private land below the wall, each with its own staff. A path from behind the original villas climbs in about twenty minutes to an unrestored stretch of the Shuiguan wall; the hotel will send up a picnic.
The access, explained
A private path on hotel land to a wild section of wall, open to guests only. That part is genuine and long-established. It is not exclusive use of the wall itself: the Shuiguan section is unmanaged, and other hikers can and do reach it from elsewhere. Taking the whole villa buys privacy from other hotel guests, not from the mountain.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. Direct with Commune by the Great Wall Kempinski, or through a Beijing-based agent; whole-villa bookings need more notice, especially for Chinese public holidays. No permit.
When to go. Spring and autumn. The villas are exposed and the path is poor in winter ice and in summer thunderstorms.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
The architecture is the draw and it is now twenty-odd years old; some villas have aged much better than others, so ask which building you are getting by name. Published descriptions of the property vary wildly on villa numbers and drive times because most of them date from around 2006. Verify the path is open when you book, since fire-risk closures affect this hillside too.
