Forbidden City, the claim of private access tested
The complex is huge, almost everything of quality sits in side halls that a self-guided visitor walks past, and the galleries that need extra tickets are where the objects are. A guide who can read the architecture is worth paying for even though the access is ordinary.

Picture your day
What is actually on sale is a timed ticket under your passport number, a private guide and a car, usually at the 08:30 opening with entry at Meridian Gate and a route through the three main halls, the inner courts and out at the north gate. The real upgrades you can buy are the separately ticketed Treasure Gallery and Clock Gallery, a guide who knows the collection, and the Hall of Mental Cultivation, which reopened on 26 December 2025 after nearly a decade of conservation.
The access, explained
We could not confirm any bookable private, after-hours or pre-opening programme at the Palace Museum. Evening openings have happened, but as public events: the first was the Lantern Festival on 19 and 20 February 2019, free, roughly 3,000 visitors a night, tickets gone within hours of release on the museum's own site. One English-language travel page asserts that evenings are reserved for VIPs and heads of state; it cites nothing and we treat it as unverified. Every commercial listing we examined that advertised exclusive or VIP access resolved to a normal timed ticket plus a guide.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. Tickets only through the museum's official reservation system at dpm.org.cn, released on a rolling window and tied to the passport you travel on; the Treasure and Clock galleries are extra and bought at the same time or inside. A Beijing operator or hotel concierge will reserve under your passport and supply a guide. No permit. Closed Mondays outside peak season.
When to go. Any season, but go at opening or in the last two hours. Avoid the first week of October and early May entirely.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
If anyone sells you the Forbidden City to yourself, ask for the museum's written authorisation and the name of the department that issued it before paying anything. State and diplomatic visits do close parts of the site, but that is protocol, not a product. Spend the money on a good guide, the two paid galleries and an early slot instead.
