Potala Palace, what a premium visit really buys
The building is the reason people come to Lhasa, and the hour inside is the same hour for everyone. What a serious operator adds is a guide who can name the lineages in each chapel, and a slot early enough that you are not climbing at altitude in the middle of the day.

Picture your day
Your agency holds a reservation for a fixed entry slot, you climb the ramp from the east gate with a Tibetan guide, and you walk the one permitted route through the White Palace apartments and the Red Palace chapels and tombs. Inside the palace proper you have about an hour; guides swipe their licence cards in and out and the clock is enforced. Snow City at the foot of the hill is a separate ticket, CNY 25 in summer and CNY 10 in winter.
The access, explained
No premium tier exists inside the palace. The route is fixed, the hour is fixed, same-day tickets are not sold, and admission windows are 09:00 to 15:40 last entry from 1 May to 31 October and 09:30 to 15:20 from 1 November to 30 April, Tuesday to Sunday. Photography inside the chapels is not permitted. What money buys is the slot, the guide and the day's logistics, nothing more. Reported daily caps around 2,300 and a rule barring rebooking within seven days come from agency pages, not the palace, so confirm them.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. Foreign visitors cannot practically self-book: the main palace sells through a Chinese-language mini-program and WeChat account requiring a verified Chinese account, and a Tibet Travel Permit plus an organised tour with a licensed guide is required in any case. Book through a Lhasa agency four to six weeks out, longer for July and August.
When to go. April to June and September to October. July and August are wettest and busiest; winter is clear, cold and far easier to ticket.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
Treat any offer of extended or after-hours access as a warning about the seller. The genuine advice is to spend two nights in Lhasa acclimatising before you climb, because the staircase at 3,650 m defeats people who flew in that morning, and to book Jokhang and Drepung with the same guide so the week has a shape.
