A private ger on the Inner Mongolian grassland

The grassland is worth one night, not three, and the whole value is whether you are at a working camp or a floor show. A private arrangement with a family and your own vehicle is what gets you off the standard circuit.

The experience

Picture your day

You drive out of Hohhot or Baotou onto the Xilamuren grassland, roughly 80 km north of Hohhot, and leave the sealed road for dirt tracks to a smaller camp of white and blue gers rather than the large coach-tour compound. The day with a herding family covers the practical things: milk tea made over the stove, the lambs, the horses, and how a ger is actually put up, which visitors are sometimes taught on open ground.

What makes it different

The access, explained

There is no permit and nothing is closed; what you are buying is an introduction and a car that will leave the tarmac. Be sceptical about authenticity claims. Xilamuren was the first Inner Mongolian grassland developed for tourism, so it has the most facilities and the most staging: a first-hand account of a camp there describes costumed nomads, sung greetings and an alcohol ceremony, and the writer could not tell whether the community lived there year-round. Gegentala is mentioned as a nearby alternative in the same material with no detail available. We could find nothing on family stays in Hulunbuir, the far north-east grassland, in English at all.

Planning the details

How to arrange it. Through a licensed Inner Mongolia operator; insist that the specific herding family is named in the booking and that it is not a coach compound. Searching Chinese platforms for 牧民家 or 蒙古包 with a specific area name turns up the small camps that have no English presence. Hohhot and Baotou both have high-speed rail and flights; no permit.

When to go. Mid-June to early September only. The grass is brown before June, and from October the nights are severe. Hulunbuir greens later and is best in July and August.

Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know

Decide what you want before you book. If you want comfort, book a well-run camp and accept that the evening is a performance. If you want a working family, expect a pit toilet, a shared stove and no plumbing, which is the actual trade and is rarely spelt out. Also note that a privately arranged ger with proper bedding is a comfortable thing, but nobody on this grassland is selling a resort, and anything advertised as a luxury camp here deserves a photograph of the bathroom before you pay.
