The hotel gate into the Summer Palace

The Summer Palace at 07:00 with nobody on the causeway is a different place from the Summer Palace at 11:00, and this is one of the very few hotel gates in China that is a real functional entrance rather than a marketing line.

The experience

Picture your day

Aman at Summer Palace occupies a courtyard complex immediately beside the Summer Palace's East Gate, roughly 15 km from central Beijing or about 45 minutes in traffic. The selling point is a gate from the hotel grounds directly into the palace park, which guests are described as using outside normal opening hours, in practice to walk the lake and the Long Corridor at first light before the public gates admit anyone.

What makes it different

The access, explained

The gate itself is well attested and multiple independent sources describe it, which puts it ahead of most access claims in this file. But the sources disagree on what it permits, and that matters. One calls it a private back entrance, another a private gate by the East Gate; some say exclusive out-of-hours access, one agency calls it a secret door guests use to come and go as they like, and a listing summarises guest reviews as unlimited access. We could not confirm the current hours, whether early entry still operates, or what ticketing applies to hotel guests. Get it in writing from the hotel, naming the hours, before you book on this basis.

Planning the details

How to arrange it. Direct with the hotel or an agent, confirming in the booking that the garden gate is operating and at what hours; it has been reported closed at times and the park's own rules change. The palace itself otherwise needs a timed reservation under your passport.

When to go. Spring and autumn for the gardens. Winter mornings over the frozen lake are the emptiest and the light is the best.

Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know

This is the one genuine privilege on the list that money buys directly, and it is still worth checking rather than assuming. Note what you are giving up: the hotel is next to the palace, not next to Beijing, and a 45-minute drive each way reshapes your days. If the Forbidden City, the hutongs and dinner are your trip, stay in the centre and visit the Summer Palace early by car instead.
