Jingdezhen: working clay where the imperial kilns were
Jingdezhen is still a working industry rather than a heritage display, and the material chain is all there: the kaolin pits at Gaoling National Mining Park, the wharf the clay came down, the kiln sites, the studios. Throwing porcelain yourself for an afternoon teaches you why the imperial pieces in the museum are difficult.

Historic Ming-era Jingdezhen porcelain; a museum object, not the workshop · setting photograph, not a depiction of a private tour or package.
Picture your day
Three or four days in the porcelain town, built around the places where you can get your hands dirty rather than the museums alone. The Imperial Kiln Museum in Taoyangli, CNY 53, holds the unearthed and restored imperial pieces; the Hutian kiln site shows Song, Yuan and Ming remains where the bluish-white qingbai glaze was worked out; Sanbao International Ceramic Village has run artist residencies since 1998 and has received artists from more than a hundred countries; the Sculpture Porcelain Factory has open studios where you can try throwing alongside working artisans. Letian Market runs Saturdays only, 09:30 to 12:30, CNY 50.
The access, explained
The open studios, residencies and demonstrations are genuine and public. What we could not find is any programme that puts a visitor at the wheel with a named master potter, and none of the sources we checked, including a detailed four-day itinerary, names a single workshop or artisan. Sanbao and the independent studios at Taoxichuan are the realistic route to one-to-one instruction, but you would be arranging it yourself with a named person, not buying a product. At the Ancient Kiln Factory craftsmen demonstrate and you watch; that is not a lesson.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. The museums take reservations and the ceramics museum is free but requires one. For instruction, contact Sanbao International Ceramic Village directly and ask for a resident artist and a throwing session, naming duration, language and fee. Expect to need Chinese. Jingdezhen is reachable by high-speed rail; no permit.
When to go. Spring and autumn. Letian Market and the Taoyang New Village night market, daily from 19:00, are worth planning the week around.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
The gap between a demonstration, a studio taster and real tuition is wide, and operators sell all three in the same words. Ask who is teaching, how many hours at the wheel, and whether your pieces will be fired and shipped, because firing takes days and most tasters end with your work abandoned. If you want a serious stretch at the wheel, go to Sanbao for a week rather than adding an afternoon to a tour.
