High-speed rail business class, and the compartment question

This is the best-value top-tier transport in China and the least oversold. Eight or ten seats in a sealed cabin, a flat bed, and arrival in the middle of the city. On the main trunk routes it is genuinely better than a short-haul flight in any cabin.

The experience

Picture your day

Business class, shangwu zuo, exists only on G-category trains. The cabin sits at the front or rear of the trainset behind automatic doors, which keeps it quiet, and the layout is 1+2 across the aisle: leather seats that swivel and recline flat to a bed, with a screen, a tray table and a reading light. On Beijing-Shanghai it is four and a half hours city centre to city centre, which beats flying once you count airports.

What makes it different

The access, explained

No special booking channel and no exclusivity; you buy a ticket like anyone else. On private compartments, be careful. Sources conflict: most describe business class as open 1+2 rows, while one travel guide says the Fuxing smart EMU uses a small private compartment layout, and it gives no seat count. The genuinely compartmented product is on the CR450AF, which has three business layouts including a six-seat suite and a more private multi-purpose suite, and that train is still a prototype: the first set rolled out on 26 November 2024, none are in service, and sources give 2026 for Beijing-Shanghai and 2027 for the second Chengdu-Chongqing line. Nobody can sell you a seat in it yet. We found no four-person compartment or sightseeing area on any G train.

Planning the details

How to arrange it. On 12306 or through an agent, up to 15 days ahead for most routes, with foreign passports accepted and now usable at the gates without a paper ticket. Business class is a handful of seats per train and sells out on Friday and Sunday trunk services. Check the carriage diagram on 12306 if the layout matters to you.

When to go. Avoid Chinese New Year, the first week of October and the early-May holiday, when business class goes within minutes of release.

Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know

The one caution is that layout varies by trainset and refurbishment, so a guide's photograph proves nothing about the train you are on. Also ignore anyone selling business class at a markup as a VIP rail product; it is a public fare, and the lounge access at major stations comes with the ticket.
