Shanghai's three-star counter, and the table that closed
A counter at this level is the closest thing in China to buying the kitchen's attention: the cooking happens in front of you and the chefs talk you through it. That is a different purchase from a large private room in a hotel dining room.

Picture your day
Taian Table on Zhenning Road in Changning is Shanghai's three-star restaurant, and the format is a single open counter: the chefs work at arm's length and everyone eats the same tasting menu. Reported seat counts vary between twelve and about twenty, which tells you how small it is. Reservations are not taken through the Michelin site; you book direct by phone or WeChat, in small batches released a few weeks at a time, and guides advise asking six to eight weeks out, two to three months for a weekend.
The access, explained
The counter is the restaurant, so there is nothing more exclusive to buy, and we could not confirm that a private dining room exists at all. One reviewer only inferred one from food being carried out of the room. If an agent offers you a private room at a three-star in Shanghai, ask which room and who has eaten in it. Separately, correct a common itinerary: Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, the ten-seat single-table room that held three stars from 2017, suspended operations in November 2024 over construction next door and its own site said it would close to the public on 29 March 2025. Anyone still selling it is working from an old file.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. Direct with the restaurant by phone or WeChat, not through a platform; a Shanghai concierge with a standing relationship is genuinely useful here. Quoted menu prices on third-party pages range from about CNY 2,588 to CNY 3,800 and we could not verify any of them, so confirm with the restaurant.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
The scarcity is real and so is the reason: the room seats under twenty. Do not pay a broker a premium on top of the menu price without seeing the confirmation in your own name. And check the Michelin Guide's current Shanghai list the month you book, because the Ultraviolet case shows how fast the top of this market changes.
