Nanshan One Tree Observation Deck
南山一棵树观景台
The classic postcard viewpoint over Chongqing: a terrace on the south-bank mountain looking straight down on the Yuzhong peninsula wedged between its two rivers. At night the whole city is laid out below you.
The story
What makes this place special
'One Tree' is a viewing platform on the Nanshan ridge on the south side of the Yangtze, within the Nanshan scenic area, at roughly 440 to 510 metres above sea level. The name refers to a single tree that stood at the spot; the platform was built because this is the point on the ridge from which the whole Yuzhong peninsula and the junction of the Yangtze and Jialing line up in one view. It is the standard source of the postcard night panorama of Chongqing.
What you’ll discover
A tiered concrete terrace on the hillside, with a lift to the upper level, looking straight down the peninsula. By day you see how improbably the city is built — towers rising directly out of cliffs with rivers on both sides. By night you see the lit skyline doubled in the water. The platform is not large, and on a clear evening it is extremely full.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Get there by about 17:30, before dusk. The platform is small, the good positions on the upper level go first, and arriving at dark means looking over other people's heads.
- Take the lift to the highest terrace rather than stopping at the first level everyone crowds onto.
- Public transport is awkward — city buses up the hill (routes serving the Nanshan stops) or a taxi. Factor the slow climb up the mountain road into your timing, especially at weekends.
- Haze is the real risk. If the day has been grey and still, the view will be grey too; Eling Park is closer and cheaper if you are gambling on the weather.
- There is no good food up here. Eat before you come up, or go down to the south bank afterwards.
When to come
Clear evenings, arriving before sunset and staying into the dark. Autumn and winter after rain give the cleanest air; summer is usually hazy.
Getting around
Better than most Chongqing viewpoints: a lift serves the upper terrace and the platform surfaces are hard and even. Getting to the site means a vehicle up the mountain, and there are steps between some terrace levels and around the approach. A wheelchair user can reach a good viewing position with help; a bad knee will be fine if you use the lift rather than the terrace stairs.
Worth knowing before you go
Arrive about 40 minutes before sunset so you see the city in daylight and then lit. Taxis are scarce coming back down at night; book a DiDi before you walk out.
