A taste of Dali

Zai Hui Shou Chicken Rice Noodles (Renmin Road)

再回首鸡肉米线(人民路一店)

A fifteen-yuan rice noodle counter on Renmin Road in the old town, doing cold chicken rice noodles — poached chicken torn into shreds over room-temperature noodles with chilli oil, vinegar and herbs. The cheapest honest meal in Dali Old Town and the local breakfast.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No award. Listed on Ctrip's Dali City food list and rated 4.4 as the old town's standard cold chicken rice noodle shop.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Cold chicken rice noodles (凉鸡米线)
  • Hot chicken rice noodles (热鸡米线)
  • Erkuai rice cake fried or in soup (饵块)

What it actually tastes like

Served cold or barely warm, strongly vinegared, with crushed peanut and raw coriander. Erkuai is a dense pressed rice cake, chewier than anything comparable in the West — it is grilled flat and smeared with sauce, or sliced and fried.

Allergens in this kitchen

peanutsesamesoygluten/wheat

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
