Discover Dali
Shuanglang
双廊古镇
A fishing village turned guesthouse strip on Erhai's quieter northeastern shore, facing the Cangshan range across the water. It has the lake's best sunset views back towards the mountains and a string of cafes built right on the shoreline.

The story
What makes this place special
Shuanglang is a village on Erhai's northeastern shore that became, from the late 2000s, the centre of Dali's boutique guesthouse boom, helped by the dancer Yang Liping's house on Yuji Island and a wave of design hotels along the water. The 2017 Erhai protection order hit it hard: more than 600 guesthouses and restaurants in the town signed undertakings to suspend business, and some reopened from 2018 after meeting the new rules. Enforcement against unauthorised building has continued; Yunnan press reported a renewed campaign in 2026, which from 17 April that year moved from a one-off operation to a standing mechanism targeting building without permits, building on farmland, excess height and storeys, and occupation of public land, with thousands of square metres demolished.
What you’ll discover
A strip of village along the eastern shore facing Cangshan across the water, so the view from here is the mountain range rather than the lake's flat side. Yuji Island, reached on a causeway, holds the densest cluster of guesthouses including Yang Liping's Sun Palace, now shown to visitors. Along the shore are cafes, jetties, swings and photo platforms, interspersed with building sites and demolition scars from the enforcement campaigns.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Shuanglang is for sleeping and sitting, not for sightseeing. There is no monument here. If you are not staying a night with the mountain view at dawn, there is little reason to make the trip.
- The famous photographs of rooms built out over the water predate the 2017-2021 clearances. Check recent photographs and the written distance from the water before booking anything described as lakefront.
- The eastern shore looks west, so sunset over Cangshan is the view from Shuanglang and sunrise is the view from the Xizhou side. Choose your shore by which one you want.
- Construction noise is a live issue. Enforcement work and rebuilding continue, and a quiet-looking guesthouse can have a demolition site next door. Ask directly.
- It is about 45 minutes to an hour by car from Dali old town round the north of the lake, or reachable by the Erhai cruise long route. Buses are slow and infrequent; plan transport before you go.
- The short section of the ecological corridor here and the road north to Shuanglang are good cycling, but the eastern shore road carries fast traffic in places.
When to come
Sunset and the hour before it, for the light on Cangshan across the water, and early morning for still water. March to May and October to November; avoid the summer rains, when the mountain opposite is usually invisible.
Getting around
Mostly flat lakeside road and promenade, so getting around the shore is feasible with a wheelchair or a bad knee. Individual guesthouses are the obstacle: most are multi-storey with narrow internal stairs, no lifts and stepped entrances, and the Yuji Island lanes are narrow and uneven. Ask about ground-floor rooms before booking.
Worth knowing before you go
Stay the night rather than day-tripping: Shuanglang faces west across the lake, so the sunset over Cangshan is the whole point and the last buses back to Dali leave before it.
