A taste of Datong

Dongfang Knife-cut Noodles

东方削面

The city's most widespread noodle chain, with branches across Datong including one within walking distance of the railway station, which makes it the default arrival or departure meal. The noodles are cut wide and thin and the broth is the richer, darker end of the Datong style.

¥20–35 per person≈ US$2.98Widely recommended on Dianping and Ctrip as the reliable local noodle chainMultiple branches including one about 1.5 km from Datong railway station, and a Yingze Street branch (迎泽街店)

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Datong's best-known local knife-cut noodle chain, widely recommended in Chinese travel write-ups; no verifiable award.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Knife-cut noodles with braised pork (猪肉刀削面)
  • Knife-cut noodles with mutton (羊肉刀削面)
  • Fried pork cutlet topping (过油肉)

What it actually tastes like

Strong dark vinegar again, plus a chilli oil that is fragrant rather than fiery. Guoyourou, the Shanxi fried pork dish, is heavily vinegared.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoyegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
