A taste of Datong

Heyangju Old Datong Restaurant

和阳居老大同饭庄

A sit-down restaurant on Dadong Street in Pingcheng District serving the full old-Datong menu rather than a single speciality, which makes it a useful choice for a group that wants offal soup, cold jelly, noodles and a hotpot on one table. Less of a spectacle than Fenglinge and more of a real dinner.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Known for covering the classic Datong dish list — yangza, Hunyuan liangfen, the old Datong assorted hotpot; no verifiable award.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Old Datong mutton offal (老大同菜羊杂)
  • Hunyuan cold buckwheat jelly (浑源凉粉)
  • Old Datong assorted hotpot (老大同什锦火锅)
  • Fried sweet millet cake (油糕)

What it actually tastes like

Offal is central, not optional. The assorted hotpot is a layered copper pot of pork, meatballs, tofu skin and cabbage in a vinegary broth — a very different thing from a Sichuan hotpot.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoysesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
