A taste of Datong

Qinyuan Shaomai

沁园稍麦

A small shaomai counter of the north-Chinese breakfast kind, where the dumplings are sold by the weight of the dough rather than by the piece and eaten in the morning with strong brick tea. Useful as a cheap counterpoint to Fenglinge's banquet version of the same dish.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

A well-reviewed local shaomai specialist near the old city; no verifiable award.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Mutton and spring onion shaomai (羊肉大葱稍麦)
  • Brick tea (砖茶)
  • Fried sweet millet cake (油糕)

What it actually tastes like

Mutton fat is the dominant flavour and the wrappers are translucent and slippery. A dish of vinegar is standard and is meant to cut the fat.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoy

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
