The story

What makes this place special

Heng Shan is the northern mountain of China's Five Great Mountains, about 62 km from Datong, with its main peak Tianfeng Ling rising above Hunyuan county to 2,016.8 m. It has been a site of state sacrifice and Daoist practice for two millennia, and its slopes carry a scatter of Ming and Qing Daoist temples rather than one great monument. The Hanging Temple sits in the gorge at its foot and is administratively part of the same scenic area, which is why many visitors conflate the two.

What you’ll discover

A cable car or a stone stair path takes you up from the valley to a cluster of small temples strung along the ridge and against the cliffs - Chaodian, Jiutian Gong, the Hall of the Northern Peak - linked by stepped paths through pine. The buildings are modest; the reason to climb is the view back down the Hunyuan valley and the sense of a Daoist mountain that is still a working place of worship rather than a museum. Two to three hours on the mountain is enough.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Heng Shan and the Hanging Temple are not the same thing. The temple is at the bottom of the gorge; the mountain is the climb above it. Most visitors come for the temple and never go up, which is a reasonable choice.
  • Take the cable car up and walk down. Walking up the stone stairs burns the time and legs you will want for the Hanging Temple, which is usually visited the same day.
  • Do the Hanging Temple first thing in the morning, because its climbing tickets are time-limited and capped, then go up the mountain afterwards. Reversing that order risks losing the temple slot.
  • If you have a car or a driver, add the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda on the way back to Datong - it is the oldest and tallest surviving all-timber pagoda in China and roughly on the route.
  • There is little shelter on the ridge and the weather turns quickly at 2,000 m; carry a layer even in summer.

When to come

Morning, April to October, with late September and October best for clear air and autumn colour on the slopes. Avoid the summit paths in ice.

Getting around

Not manageable in a wheelchair above the cable car station, and demanding for a bad knee. The temples are linked by steep, uneven stone stairs with irregular risers and intermittent handrails, and the ridge paths involve constant up and down. The cable car removes the main ascent and a chair can reach the upper station area, but the temples themselves are all reached by steps. If mobility is limited, do the Hanging Temple gorge floor instead and skip the mountain.

Worth knowing before you go

Most day tours give you the Hanging Temple and only a token stop on Heng Shan. If the mountain itself matters to you, say so when booking the car, or you will spend the afternoon driving back.
