A taste of Guangzhou

Guangzhou Restaurant (Wenchang flagship)

广州酒家(文昌总店)

The city's best-known state-linked Cantonese institution, with its main branch on Wenchang South Road. It has a private-room, garden-courtyard atmosphere and serves morning tea from 7:00 to 14:30. It is touristy and often crowded, but the dim sum is made fresh to order and the shrimp dumpling is the standard test. It is also famous across China for its mooncakes.

¥95–110 per person (reported for the Wenchang flagship morning tea)≈ US$14Liwan, 2 Wenchang South Road. Nearest metro station not confirmed.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Shrimp dumplings with thin skin (水晶虾饺)
  • Boat congee (艇仔粥)
  • Steamed rice rolls (肠粉)
  • Barbecued pork buns (叉烧包)

What it actually tastes like

Boat congee (艇仔粥) is a Guangzhou original with fish slices, squid, peanuts and fried dough; raw-fish congee and 生滚粥 are cooked to order, and the congee arrives scalding hot, so wait before you taste it. Menus can include chicken feet and offal.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
