Discover Guilin and Yangshuo

Laozhai Hill

老寨山

A steep, unmanaged hill rising straight out of Xingping old town, giving the classic aerial view of the 20-yuan-note river bend. Free, strenuous, and the best sunset in Yangshuo County.

The story

What makes this place special

Laozhai Hill stands directly behind the wharf at Xingping, roughly 300 metres high, overlooking the bend of the Li River that includes the Huangbu Daoying reach. It has no monument and no ticket - its reputation was made by photographers and backpackers, and a small pavilion at the top is associated with a Japanese visitor who helped build the path, a story widely repeated locally. It is the free alternative to the ticketed viewpoints.

What you’ll discover

A path from beside the Xingping boat wharf climbs steeply up the hillside, partly on rough stone steps and partly on unmade and eroded rock, in places steep enough to need hands, to a small pavilion and open rock at the summit. From the top the Li River is laid out below in a long curve between karst towers - the closest and most vertical view of the river bend available, and the usual spot for sunset over Xingping.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • It is free, and that is a large part of why people go. Xianggong Hill and the organised viewpoints charge; this does not.
  • It is also genuinely risky and Chinese guides say so plainly: the path is unimproved, steep and exposed in sections, with loose rock, and people get hurt on it. Do not climb it in the dark, in rain, or in flip-flops, and do not start up for sunset without a torch for the descent.
  • If you want a staircase and a terrace rather than a scramble, go to Xianggong Hill for sunrise or Damian Hill instead. Several Chinese guides rate Laozhai's view below both.
  • Allow much longer than the height suggests - it is a short climb in distance and a slow one in practice, and the descent is harder than the ascent.
  • The trailhead is right by the wharf in Xingping, so it combines with a Xingping afternoon and the riverside walk to the banknote viewpoint without any transport.

When to come

Late afternoon for the light on the river, with enough margin to be down before dark; or early morning for mist. Dry weather only - the rock is dangerous wet.

Getting around

Not accessible at all. This is an unmade, steep, partly hand-over-hand climb on eroded rock with no railings, no steps in places and no alternative route. It is unsuitable for anyone with a bad knee, a balance problem or a fear of exposure, and impossible in a wheelchair. Visitors with any mobility limitation should use Xianggong Hill or the flat riverside path at Xingping instead.

Worth knowing before you go

This is an undeveloped hill: 1,200-odd rough stone steps, no railings in places. Bring a head torch if you stay for sunset, and do not attempt it in rain.
