Longji Rice Terraces (Dragon's Backbone)

龙脊梯田 / 龙胜龙脊梯田

Hillsides carved into stacked rice terraces by Zhuang and Yao farmers over 700 years, wrapped around villages of wooden stilt houses. Completely different scenery from the karst rivers and worth the detour from Guilin.

From ¥80 for the scenic area; the three internal cable cars cost extra≈ US$12A full day, better as an overnight stayPassport needed

The story

What makes this place special

The Longji or Dragon's Backbone terraces are in Longsheng County, around two to three hours by road north-west of Guilin, and were mostly cut into the hillsides roughly 650 years ago - a Ming-era project, not an ancient one. They are worked by Zhuang and Red Yao villages and climb from the riverside at about 600 metres to the ridgelines around 800 metres and above. They are a living farming system: the shape of the hillside changes with the crop cycle, and the famous mirror-water effect exists only because the fields are flooded for transplanting.

What you’ll discover

The scenic area is three separate village areas, 10 to 20km apart on winding mountain roads, and you choose one rather than seeing them all. Ping'an, the Zhuang village, is the classic first-timer's choice, with two named viewpoints - Seven Stars with Moon (seven knolls each standing in the middle of a field) and Nine Dragons and Five Tigers (nine ridges off the main spine and five low summits) - reached entirely on stone steps. Jinkeng / Dazhai, the Red Yao area, is the biggest and most open, with the Thousand-Layer Staircase of dense terrace lines and high viewpoints at Jinfo Ding and Xishan Shaole; it has a cable car. The third, Longji Ancient Zhuang Village, is the least developed, with intact stilt-house architecture and weaker terrace views.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Pick Jinkeng/Dazhai if you want the big photograph or have any doubt about climbing, because it is the only area with a cable car; pick Ping'an for a half-day visit on a tighter schedule, but understand it is stone steps the whole way up and there is no lift of any kind there.
  • Timing against the farming calendar matters more than the weather. Flooded mirror fields are roughly April to early June, green terraces through summer, and gold before the harvest in late September to mid October. After the harvest and through winter the terraces are bare brown mud and the view people come for simply is not there.
  • Stay the night. The thing day-trippers miss is the dawn: mist sitting in the valleys below the terraces at sunrise is the view, and Dazhai is the usual base for it. A day trip from Guilin gives you the terraces in flat midday light.
  • Your guesthouse is probably a walk uphill from the road or the cable car with your luggage, on steps. Ask the guesthouse before you book how far from the drop-off it is and whether they will carry bags - this catches people out constantly.
  • Take cash and small notes. The villages run on small transactions, some stretches have patchy signal, and the Red Yao women who offer to pose or to carry bags expect to be paid.

When to come

Sunrise or the last hour before sunset, when the terrace walls cast shadow lines; midday flattens them completely. Best seasons are the flooding period in late spring and the gold just before the autumn harvest. Avoid the first week of October, when the terraces are at their best and so are packed.

Getting around

Difficult to impossible. These are working hillside fields: access to every viewpoint is by irregular stone steps and earth paths with drops and no railings, and at Ping'an there is no mechanical assistance at all. The Jinkeng/Dazhai cable car to Jinfo Ding is the only way a visitor who cannot climb will see a terrace panorama, and even there the station approaches and the paths beyond involve steps. Not a realistic wheelchair destination; with a bad knee, use Dazhai and the cable car and accept you will see one viewpoint.

Worth knowing before you go

Timing is everything: mid-April to early June for flooded mirror terraces, late September to mid-October for gold. In mid-summer and winter the terraces are plain green or bare. Ping'an and Dazhai are the two main village bases.
