The house favourites
What to order
Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.
- West Lake vinegar fish (西湖醋鱼)
- Sauteed shrimp with Longjing tea leaves (龙井虾仁)
- Gold medal braised pork, sliced and stacked (金牌扣肉/东坡肉)
What it actually tastes like
Still recognisably Hangzhou food, which means sweetness in savoury dishes, soy-braised richness and no chilli at all. The vinegar fish here is the version that converts sceptics: the fish is clean-tasting rather than muddy and the sweet black vinegar is balanced, but the bones are still in it and it is still served barely warm. Several courses arrive at room temperature by design.
Allergens in this kitchen
This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
