A taste of Harbin

Lao Chang Spring Pancakes

老昌春饼

A Harbin chunbing specialist, serving the northeastern habit of wrapping stir-fried dishes into thin wheat pancakes at the table. It is a cheap, filling, very local meal and a good way to try several Dongbei dishes without committing to banquet-sized plates of each.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

A long-running and heavily reviewed local chunbing chain (around 4.3/5 on aggregated Chinese review data); no verifiable award.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Thin spring pancakes to wrap (春饼/筋饼)
  • Shredded pork in sweet bean sauce (京酱肉丝)
  • Fish-fragrant shredded pork (鱼香肉丝)
  • Stir-fried bean sprouts with vinegar (醋溜豆芽)

What it actually tastes like

The sweet fermented bean sauce for the pancakes is dark, salty-sweet and funky. Raw spring onion batons are served to roll inside and are much sharper than Western onions.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoyeggsesamepeanut

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
