The story

What makes this place special

Jiaozi Shan, the Sedan Chair Mountain, is in Luquan County about four hours north of Kunming, reaching 4,223m and often called the highest mountain in central Yunnan. It is not a glacier mountain: the snow and the ice waterfalls are seasonal, and the range holds small alpine lakes, meadows and more than forty species of rhododendron between roughly 2,600m and 3,900m. The ice season runs from late November to March, when the local attractions are rime ice, cloud seas, sunrise and frozen waterfalls; the rhododendrons flower from April to June.

What you’ll discover

Two cableways carry you up from the valley: one from Xinshan Yakou towards the Sifangjing area, and a second from Xiapingzi past the waterfall groups to Dahei Qing. Above the top stations are steel boardwalks and staircases across open alpine meadow and bare rock, past tarns and, in winter, frozen waterfall faces, climbing towards the summit viewpoint. In clear winter weather you are above a sea of cloud with snow underfoot; in May the same slopes are solid rhododendron.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • This is a high mountain reached from a low city in one day. Kunming is at 1,890m and the boardwalks are above 3,800m, so visitors feel it, and the final staircases to the viewpoint are the hardest part of the day. Go up slowly and treat the top steps as optional.
  • The drive is the real cost. It is roughly four hours each way from Kunming on mountain roads, which makes a self-driving day trip a 14-hour day. An overnight in Luquan or at the mountain base turns it into a reasonable trip and gets you the sunrise.
  • Pick your season deliberately. Late November to March for snow, rime and ice waterfalls; late April to mid-May for rhododendron; summer for meadows, waterfalls and cloud seas but frequent rain. There is no month that gives you all of it.
  • Booking is required in the ice-and-snow season and at holidays, through the scenic area's own channel, and the cableways close for wind and heavy snow. Check the day before rather than driving on spec.
  • Weather at the top bears no relation to Kunming. Take a proper windproof and warm layer in any season, plus crampon-style boot grips in winter, when the boardwalks ice up.
  • There is almost no food on the mountain. Bring your own.

When to come

Late November to March for snow, ice waterfalls and cloud seas, with sunrise the best moment if you stay nearby; late April to mid-June for rhododendron. Avoid the heavy rains of July and August.

Getting around

Limited. The cableways board on the level, so a wheelchair user can get to the top station and the view, but the attractions above are reached by long runs of steel staircase and boardwalk with frequent steps and no lifts, in cold and wind at nearly 4,000m. A bad knee can do a short section near the top station and should not attempt the summit viewpoint.

Worth knowing before you go

You climb from Kunming's 1,900 m to over 4,000 m in a single morning — take it slowly on the summit boardwalk, and check the road is open, since winter ice closes the access road without warning.
