Kunming World Horti-Expo Garden

昆明世博园

The 1999 World Horticultural Exposition site, kept on as a large botanical park of themed national gardens, greenhouses and a bonsai collection on the hills northeast of the city. It is a calm, green half-day with Kunming's spring-like climate on display.

The story

What makes this place special

The Expo Garden is the site of the 1999 World Horticultural Exposition, held in Kunming from 30 April to 31 October 1999 and attended by around 9.5 million visitors. It was built in the Jindian scenic area in Kunming's northeastern suburbs, roughly 4km from the city centre, and the exposition was the event that established Kunming's modern reputation as a flower city. The grounds were kept as a park afterwards. A redevelopment programme was launched in July 2019 to repurpose the site around tourism and leisure, cultural and creative industries, retail and wellness, including a planned Yunnan ethnic arts centre; the current state of that work is not well documented.

What you’ll discover

A very large hillside park of 1990s pavilions and themed gardens: national gardens contributed by participating countries, a greenhouse, a bamboo garden, a tea garden, a Chinese provincial gardens section and a large central plaza with a water axis. It is a period piece as much as a botanical collection, and parts of it are visibly tired, with some pavilions closed or repurposed while others are kept up.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Expect a 1999 world's fair site that has aged, not a botanical garden in its prime. Some sections are maintained and pleasant, others are empty or under redevelopment; go for the scale and the oddity, not for horticultural standards.
  • The site is large and hilly. Take the internal buggy or you will spend the visit walking uphill between pavilions on tarmac.
  • It shares the hillside with the Golden Temple and the two are linked, so buy any combined option at the gate and do both in one trip rather than making two journeys out here.
  • If you want serious plants in Kunming, the Kunming Botanical Garden run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Heilongtan to the north, is the better destination and almost no visitors know it exists.
  • Spring, when the azaleas, tulips and camellias are planted up, is the only season the garden sections are at their best. In late summer much of it is green and unremarkable.

When to come

March to May, when the beds are planted and the camellias and azaleas on this side of Kunming are flowering. Weekday mornings for quiet.

Getting around

Mixed. The main plaza, the water axis and the principal roads are wide, paved and gently graded, and the internal buggy covers most of the site, so a wheelchair user can get round the core. Individual pavilions and the themed gardens on the slopes are reached by steps and steep paths. A bad knee should use the buggy and treat this as a sitting-and-riding visit rather than a walk.

Worth knowing before you go

The grounds are big and hilly, so take the internal shuttle if you want to see more than the central gardens — and pair it with the Golden Temple, which is on the same hillside.
