A taste of Lhasa

Amdo Nuozeng Tibetan Restaurant

安多诺增藏餐

An Amdo-style Tibetan restaurant — the cooking of the northeastern Tibetan plateau rather than central Tibet — known for meat pies, yak dishes and Tibetan hotpot. The smell of yak butter runs through the whole room, which tells you this is a place Tibetans eat rather than a place built for coaches.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No. 14 on Ctrip's Lhasa must-visit food list, rated 4.7, for authentic Tibetan dishes

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Tibetan meat pie (藏式肉饼)
  • Tibetan hotpot (藏式火锅)
  • Yak momos (牦牛肉包子)
  • Butter tea (酥油茶)

What it actually tastes like

The yak butter smell is strong and lingers in clothes — some visitors find it hard going before they have eaten anything. Expect offal in the hotpot and butter tea poured without asking.

Allergens in this kitchen

dairygluten/wheatsoy

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
