A taste of Lhasa

Tiancun Sour Soup Yak Hotpot Tibetan Restaurant

田村·酸汤鲜牦牛肉火锅藏餐厅

A Tibetan hotpot house built around fresh yak in a sour broth, second on Ctrip's Lhasa list with the highest rating on it. Hotpot is a good strategy at altitude: the food is hot, the broth is hydrating, and you can eat slowly in small amounts rather than facing a plate.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Sour-broth yak hotpot (酸汤牦牛肉火锅)
  • Fresh yak slices (鲜牦牛肉)
  • Yak offal selection (牦牛杂)
  • Highland barley noodles in the pot (青稞面)

What it actually tastes like

Yak offal is a standard part of the order — say so if you want meat only. The sour broth is fermented and tangy rather than vinegary. Portions of fatty yak brisket are very rich and many visitors at altitude find they can only manage a little.

Allergens in this kitchen

dairygluten/wheatsoysesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
