A taste of Nanjing

Hao Po Tang Bao

好婆汤包

The owner's grandparents co-founded Jiming, one of the legendary Nanjing soup-dumpling houses, in the 1950s; he took the family recipe and opened this bright, young-feeling shop on Taiping North Road in 2017. The Nanjing tang bao is pleated with the folds facing down, which is what keeps the soup inside. It is the rare cheap Nanjing shop that takes cards.

MICHELIN Bib Gourmand (good quality, good value cooking) in the MICHELIN Guide Shanghai | Jiangsu | Zhejiang 2026, and named in the MICHELIN Guide's Nanjing food feature for soup dumplings

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Pork soup dumplings (鲜肉汤包)
  • Crabmeat and roe soup dumplings (蟹粉汤包)
  • Nanjing braised noodles (老卤面)
  • Duck blood curd glass noodle soup (鸭血粉丝汤)

What it actually tastes like

Crab-roe dumplings are rich and faintly bitter. Otherwise mild. The dumplings arrive with scalding soup inside — eat them with the vinegar and ginger provided, and give them a minute.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
