A taste of Nanjing

Li Ji Qing Zhen Guan

李记清真馆

A century-old halal dim sum house on a lane in Qinhuai, a few minutes from the Confucius Temple, with a glass wall so you can watch the kitchen fold dumplings. It is the Nanjing address for beef potstickers — crescent-shaped, juicy inside, browned and crisp on the base — and the queue outside is permanent. Being halal, it is also the only place on this Nanjing list a Muslim visitor can eat without negotiation.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Beef potstickers (牛肉锅贴)
  • Beef xiao long bao with soupy, gingery filling (牛肉汤包)
  • Beef wonton soup (牛肉馄饨)

What it actually tastes like

Straightforward by the standards of this list — no offal, no fermentation, no chilli to speak of. The soup dumplings are genuinely full of hot liquid; bite a small hole first rather than putting one whole in your mouth.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoysesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
