A taste of Qingdao

Shuangshuang Beer House (Taidong)

爽爽啤酒屋(台东店)

A twelve-year-old beer house in the blocks behind Yingkou Road market, and a good default if you want the bring-your-own-seafood experience without gambling on which door to walk through. It cooks live seafood to order, posts its processing prices openly, and does not run hidden charges. Around ¥80-120 a head with drinks, which buys a considerable amount of shellfish.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No formal award. Known locally as a long-established Taidong beer house with publicly posted processing prices and no hidden charges — the specific thing that distinguishes an honest shop from a tourist trap in this district

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Spicy stir-fried clams (辣炒蛤蜊)
  • Blanched mantis shrimp (白灼虾爬子)
  • Grilled or stir-fried whatever you carried in from the market (加工海鲜)
  • Draught beer by the jin (散啤)

What it actually tastes like

Shells, heads and bones stay on. Spicy stir-fries here use dried chilli and a lot of garlic rather than Sichuan pepper, so there is heat but no numbing. Clams are gritty if undercooked; a good shop purges them first.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
