The story

What makes this place special

The West Bund Museum opened on 8 November 2019 on the Xuhui riverside, in a building by David Chipperfield Architects, as the Shanghai end of a five-year exhibition partnership with the Centre Pompidou signed on 19 December 2018. Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the project on 5 November 2019. The original agreement ran from 2019 to 2024 and the programme was built around long-run semi-permanent displays drawn from the Pompidou collection, with roughly three eighteen-month collection shows and about ten six-month special exhibitions planned over the term. The site is part of the West Bund cultural corridor built on former docks and factory land.

What you’ll discover

Three stacked pinwheel-plan galleries clad in translucent glass, with a tall foyer and a riverside terrace. The permanent-collection displays are twentieth-century European modernism hung chronologically or thematically - the kind of work rarely shown in China - plus a dedicated new-media gallery. Shows change, so what is on the walls depends on the year, but the building and the Huangpu views from the upper levels are consistent.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Check what is actually on before going. The Pompidou arrangement produces completely different shows on an eighteen-month cycle, and the museum is worth a trip for some and not others.
  • It is one stop on the West Bund corridor, not a destination on its own. Pair it with the Long Museum West Bund and the Tank Shanghai, which are walkable along the river from here, and do all three in one afternoon.
  • The riverside terrace and the river walk outside are free and are the best part for anyone not paying for the galleries.
  • Weekday afternoons are quiet. Weekends during a popular show see timed-entry queues in the foyer.
  • The upper gallery's window onto the Huangpu is the one architectural moment people miss because they are looking at the art.

When to come

Late afternoon on a weekday, so you finish in the galleries and come out onto the riverside at dusk. Any season; it is indoors and the river walk is best in spring and autumn.

Getting around

Fully accessible: lifts to all gallery levels, level thresholds, wide circulation, accessible toilets and a step-free entrance from the riverside. Wheelchairs are generally available at the desk. The riverside promenade outside is flat and paved. This is one of the easiest museums in Shanghai for limited mobility.

Worth knowing before you go

Chain it with the Long Museum West Bund and the Tank Shanghai along the same riverside strip - all three are within a 25-minute walk, and the promenade between them is one of the city's best.
