A taste of Shenzhen

Jieyang Lao Er Kway Teow Soup

揭阳老二粿条汤

A long-running Teochew street-food canteen on Hongling South Road in Luohu, open for 20-plus years and famous for one bowl: flat rice noodles in a clear duck-based broth. The menu runs to about a hundred Chaoshan dishes, from stir-fried noodles to braised goose and offal, and it serves late. It is the single best budget stop for tasting Chaoshan in Shenzhen.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Duck kway teow soup (鸭肉粿条汤)
  • Stir-fried kway teow (炒粿条)
  • Chaoshan braised dishes and goose (潮汕卤水)

What it actually tastes like

Chaoshan menus often include offal and raw marinated crab or shrimp (生腌), which is raw shellfish in soy and chilli and a food-safety consideration. Broth is clean and light; sauces and pickled greens bring the salt.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoyshellfish

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
