A taste of Shenzhen

Xin Rong Ji (Ping An Finance Centre)

新荣记

The Guangdong branch of a Taizhou (coastal Zhejiang) seafood restaurant, on level 6 of the north tower of the Ping An Finance Centre in Futian. A calm room with nine tables and two private rooms; the focus is East China Sea fish and shellfish, cooked simply. Expect the bill to reflect the seafood.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Braised brown croaker lion's head meatball with crab (蟹粉狮子头)
  • Salt-brine tofu clay pot (盐卤豆腐煲)
  • Pan-fried pomfret (煎鲳鱼)
  • Crispy ribbon fish (酥带鱼)
  • Braised yellow croaker (红烧黄鱼)

What it actually tastes like

Taizhou cooking leans on bony fish and uses preserved or wine-cured seafood. The menu includes aged rice-wine cured crab, which is raw crab and a real food-safety consideration. Ribbon fish and croaker have fine bones.

Allergens in this kitchen

fishshellfishsoygluten/wheategg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
