Dameisha Beach Park
大梅沙海滨公园
Shenzhen's main public beach, a long curve of sand on Dapeng Bay with free entry and a promenade of sculpture. The closest thing the city has to a seaside holiday, half an hour from the towers.

The story
What makes this place special
Dameisha is Shenzhen's main public beach, on the Dapeng Bay side of Yantian District, with a sand frontage usually given as about 1,800 metres. It has been a free municipal park rather than a resort for most of its life, and the park was substantially rebuilt, with the first phase of the reconstruction reopening at the end of September 2020 along with a new car park beside the Moon Plaza entrance.
What you’ll discover
A long crescent of grey-gold sand between headlands, backed by a landscaped park with lawns, sculpture, showers and changing facilities, and east and west entrances. On a summer weekend it is extremely full; on a winter weekday it is almost empty and you walk the whole curve alone. The water is calm and shallow near shore. The neighbouring Xiaomeisha beach is a separate, smaller, paid resort area.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Driving in high season requires a vehicle booking. From the first day of the May holiday to the end of the National Day holiday, cars need a permit arranged in advance through the traffic police or park WeChat account, and in practice people turn up without one and are turned away. Take metro Line 8 to Dameisha instead.
- The beach closes outright in typhoons and heavy rain, sometimes with only hours' notice, and July to September is typhoon season. Check before travelling out — it is a long way from the city centre.
- Swimming is seasonal in practice: comfortable from roughly May to October, and the water is cold and the park bare from December to March, when it is still a good walk.
- Go on a weekday. The difference between a Tuesday and a Sunday here is the difference between a quiet coastline and a crowd.
- The headland walk and the coastal path east towards Yantian are better than the beach itself out of season and almost nobody uses them.
When to come
May to June and late September to October: warm enough to swim, outside the worst of the typhoon season and the peak crowds. Weekday mornings.
Getting around
Good up to the sand. The park paths, promenade and facilities are flat, paved and step-free, with level access from the metro station and ramps at the entrances, so the whole seafront can be enjoyed from a wheelchair. Getting onto the sand itself is the usual problem — there are no beach matting routes or amphibious chairs to rely on. Facilities including accessible toilets and showers are in the park behind.
Worth knowing before you go
Xiaomeisha next door is paid and more developed; Dameisha is the free one.
