Shenzhen Bay Park
深圳湾公园
A 13-kilometre waterfront strip of boardwalk and mangrove looking straight across the bay to Hong Kong's New Territories. Migratory birds in winter, runners and cyclists at all hours.

The story
What makes this place special
Shenzhen Bay Park is the linear coastal park along the city's western shore, facing Hong Kong's New Territories across a narrow stretch of water. Published figures for its length vary between roughly 10.5 and 13 kilometres depending on which stretch is counted. It was built on reclaimed and remediated shoreline next to the Futian mangrove reserve, and the mangroves and mudflats it adjoins are an internationally important stop on the East Asian–Australasian flyway: migratory birds concentrate there from autumn through to the following spring.
What you’ll discover
A continuous promenade and cycle path along the water, with lawns, viewing platforms, mangrove edges and mudflats, running from the Shekou end past Talent Park and on towards Futian. Across the water you see the hills of Hong Kong, which is the detail most visitors do not expect. The Shenzhen Bay Bridge crosses at the southern end. At low tide in winter the mudflats fill with waders; in the evening the path fills with runners and families.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Come at low tide between about November and March if you care about the birds. Outside that window the mudflats are empty and it is simply a nice promenade.
- Bring binoculars. Black-faced spoonbills and large wader flocks are regularly on the flats within sight of the path and are invisible to the naked eye.
- It is much too long to walk end to end. Rent a bike, or pick one segment — the stretch either side of Talent Park is the most interesting — and use the metro at both ends.
- The strict nature reserve at Futian is not open to casual visitors; the public park is what you walk, and it gives you the views without a permit.
- Sunset here faces west over the water towards Hong Kong, which is unusual for a Chinese city waterfront and is the reason the path is full at dusk.
When to come
November to March for birds, clear air and comfortable walking. Any evening for the sunset and the local crowd. Avoid midday in summer — there is little shade.
Getting around
Excellent. The entire promenade is flat, wide, smooth and step-free, with ramps at every entrance, accessible toilets at intervals, seating throughout and level access from several metro stations along its length. One of the best long accessible walks in southern China.
Worth knowing before you go
The Futian Mangrove reserve at the eastern end is a serious birding site between November and March.
