Shenzhen Talent Park

深圳人才公园

A newer lakeside park on Shenzhen Bay built around a bay inlet, with a long pedestrian bridge and the Qiuxian Pavilion viewing tower. Quieter than Lianhuashan and with a cleaner skyline reflection at night.

The story

What makes this place special

Talent Park opened on 1 November 2017 in the Houhai district of Nanshan, covering 770,000 square metres of which 300,000 is water. The date was chosen: Shenzhen designated 1 November as its Talent Day from 2017, and the park is a piece of civic argument in landscape form — a public park built to say that the city's asset is the people it attracts. It adjoins the Shenzhen Bay coastal belt and the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base.

What you’ll discover

A large tidal lagoon crossed by sculptural footbridges, with lawns, a bright red arched bridge that is the park's signature image, a reading room, a pavilion called Qiuxian Ge, and walls listing names of people the city honours. On the water side it runs straight into the Shenzhen Bay promenade with Hong Kong's hills across the strait. In the evening the surrounding towers light up and reflect in the lagoon, which is why the park is full after dark.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Come at dusk and stay an hour. The point of this park is the reflection of the Houhai skyline in the water, and it does not exist by day.
  • It opens early and stays open until about eleven at night, which makes it the obvious thing to do on an evening when museums have shut.
  • Walk straight out of the park onto the Shenzhen Bay promenade and turn south-west for the sunset over the water towards Hong Kong. The two together are a better evening than either alone.
  • The red arched bridge is the photograph everyone wants and is busiest between about seven and nine in the evening; come earlier if you want it clear.
  • Free and without booking, and on metro Line 2 at Houhai or Dengliang — no reason to drive, and parking in Houhai is painful.

When to come

Evening, from about half an hour before sunset. Year round; autumn and winter give the clearest reflections and the most comfortable temperatures.

Getting around

Excellent. The park is new, flat and designed for level access: wide paved paths, ramped bridges, step-free routes throughout, accessible toilets and frequent seating, with level connections to the metro and to the Shenzhen Bay promenade. Among the easiest evening outings in the city for a wheelchair user.

Worth knowing before you go

Walk here along the bay from Houhai and you get the whole Nanshan waterfront in one evening.
