A taste of Suzhou

Su Cheng Jia Yan (Ligongdi Road)

苏城家宴

On the Jinji Lake waterfront in the Industrial Park, the modern half of Suzhou, with a terrace over the water. The kitchen does a restrained, modern reading of Su cuisine — less oil, less sugar, better produce — which makes it the easiest entry point on this list for a visitor who finds classic Suzhou braises cloying.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Lion's head meatball soup with Berkshire pork, longsnout catfish and water chestnut (狮子头)
  • Seasonal river produce from the lake menu (时令河鲜)

What it actually tastes like

Deliberately lighter and less sweet than traditional Suzhou cooking, which is the point of the place. Still expect freshwater fish with bones in.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
